Dear Diary: Causual Encounters
The Fishtank Performance Studio will feature a two-night storytelling event where participants share their experiences of online dating. The event, titled "Casual Encounters," will explore the world of virtual interactions between strangers through humor, personal narrative and audience participation.
Casual Encounters is the newest project from Meghan Whelan, creator and producer of Dear Diary, the long-running series that began at The Fishtank in 2010. Readers at Dear Diary share their meandering adolescent journals with audiences and the result is often a mortifying, hilarious romp of catharsis. Whelan takes that concept to a new level with Casual Encounters, giving stage to the awkward act of meeting people online.
"Kansas City has great online dating stories," Whelan says. "This is one of the worst cities for dating in the entire country. If you're single in K.C., chances are you've tried finding someone online. And chances are, you've encountered a lot of weirdos and gone on some dismal first dates. I want all of us to be able to share in the misery of being single in this town through laughter and maybe lighten the mood a little."
The host for both nights is comedian and Kansas City native, Susanna "Lucky DeLuxe" Lee, now residing in Los Angeles. Lee often includes stories of dating in her stand-up routine and starred in her one-woman show, "Getting Lucky," at The Fishtank during The Kansas City Fringe Festival in 2011.
Audiences of Kansas City will get their chance to laugh with Lee and all the participants of Casual Encounters (including Dear Diary veterans, Ashlee Fairchild Jones and Jeremy Lillig) during a two-night run, Saturday, November 16, 2013 and Sunday, November 17, 2013. Both shows start at 7:00pm. Tickets are available online, $12 advanced; $15 at the door.
