Wednesday, December 4 8:00 PM at The Nyack Center MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING Directed by Joss Whedon With Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Nathan Fillion 2012, USA 109 minutes, rated PG-13
Crackling with a busy, wayward energy, this film draws out the screwball nature of Shakespeare's comedy. Shot in black-and-white and set in modern day Southern California, the combative courtship of Beatrice and Benedick recalls classic romantic studio films. The knotty double plot is propelled by friendships, rivalries and a blithe spirit at once romantic and cynical. Its sly, robust eroticism abounds in earthy wordplay, which goes a long way towards making the film modern-day cool.
POST-FILM DISCUSSION: Dan Hanchrow, a director for the Children's Shakespeare Theater and actor, will be joined by Chris Carroll and James Sarna, who appeared with him in the Strange Bedfellows Company production of Much Ado About Nothing.
HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE: Please bring a game or toy to this event to support the Nyack Center holiday toy drive for children in our area.
"With its interrogations of gender, feminism, and marriage, Shakespeare's comedy is an apt vehicle for Whedon's own storytelling agenda." Chris Packham, The Village Voice
"With Much Ado About Nothing, Whedon has crafted an endearing bagatelle, made with equal parts brio and love, ambition and pared-down modesty." Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
"Finally! A romantic comedy that works. And not just because of Shakespeare." Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
