Double Edge Workshop Intensive
Saturday/Sunday, January 18/19: 10am to 6pm
Mon/Tues/Wed, January 20/21/22: 6pm to 10pm
Location: SOMArts Cultural Center

This workshop offers an introduction to Double Edge Theatre's 30-year-old training methodology, which is the cornerstone of the company's collaborative process. Training will be led by members from the Double Edge ensemble, and will incorporate physical elements, work with large objects, and improvisation. The company's training technique began in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with Founder/Artistic Director Stacy Klein's studies with Rena Mirecka, lead actress of Polish director Jerzy Grotowski's Teatr Laboratorium. Over time, Klein and the Double Edge ensemble created a unique, holistic methodology, employing the actor's full potential  physical, vocal, emotional, and imaginative  to drive individual exploration, ensemble collaboration, and performance creation. The company's training methodology has attracted students from all over the US and the world to learn innovative techniques that enable them to physically and visually craft an original theatrical landscape.

Company Bio
Double Edge Theatre's mission is to create a 'living culture' by developing the highest quality of original theatre performance based on the long-term imaginative work of actors and their interaction with the communities where the work takes place. The company's goal is to elevate the creation and understanding of artistic expression and cultural mutuality between artists and communities. Founded in 1982 by Stacy Klein, the company applies rigorous physical training and the principle of the actor's autonomy to create work in an ensemble, laboratory setting. Double Edge's original performances are highly physical, immersive events that are lush and dreamlike, nuanced and emotional, and are created by an ensemble of multi-talented artists who have worked together over many years. These works tour nationally and internationally, offering opportunities for reciprocal exchange between artists and audiences. Double Edge cultivates a permanent center for performance, training, research, and cultural exchange in rural Ashfield, MA, at its Farm Center. The company leads year-round multi-disciplinary training programs for new and emerging artists, hosts residenciesand rural/international symposia, and creates annual indoor/outdoor traveling Summer Spectacles.
