Musica Sacra Dec. 6th, West Seattle, Christmas Concert
The Musica Sacra Chamber Chorale's 2013 December concert series explores The Mystery of Christmas. Featuring flautist Wendy Wilhelmi, it will be an opportunity to sit back, absorb and ponder the beauty and wonder of the season; a true oasis of musical reflection during the holidays. Also featured with be the NORTHWEST PREMIERE of Eric Whitacre's marvelous Sainte-Chapelle.
During this holy season all is clouded in mystery. The splendor of this mystery dazzles the understanding, but it inundates the heart with joy. A Virgin becomes a Mother, and remains a Virgin; things divine are commingled with those that are human; and a previously unknown star of wondrous radiance appears in the east. All these events add to this atmosphere of wonderment. In our December concert series we examine this mystery in musical form.
The concert opens with a series of selections that focus specifically on the mysteries surrounding Christmas including Gustav Schrek's Entrance Scene from his Advent Motet, Morten Lauridsen's O Magnum Mysterium (O Great Mystery), and Abbie Betinis,Cedit, Hyems (Be Gone, Winter!).
We then explore the mystery of the virgin birth with Arvo Pärt's marvelous Magnificat coupled with a Nunc Dimittis from the Rachmaninoff Vespers (this pairing is typically done in the Anglican service). This segment ends with a beautiful setting of the Ave Maria by the Basque composer Javier Busto.
There has always been mystery associated with the stars in the heavens and the Christmas season. Maestro Ingalls has picked two selections from dissimilar backgrounds that explore this wonderment to close the first half of the program: Randall Thompson's Choose Something like a Star from Frostiana and Nancy Wertsch's setting of When You Wish Upon a Star.
The second half of our concert opens with the much anticipated premiere of Eric Whitacre's Sainte-Chapelle. Written for the Tallis Scholars in early 2013 this anthem explores the beauty surrounding the angels as represented in the windows of the Gaude inspired cathedral in Paris, France. We then explore other mysterious aspects that give this holy season its unique charm including the music that fills the air and burning candles; specifically as they manifest themselves within the Hannakah tradition. Selections include Calm on the Listening Ear of Night (Dickau), Musica Dei Donum (Rutter) and Haneirot Halalu (Applebaum). Our concert comes to a close with music focusing on the mystery of the Savior's birth including Lully, Lulla, Thou Little Tiny Child Op.25b of Kenneth Leighton and In Silent Night by Mitchell Southall, recently recorded by the Chorale.
