On Holy Ground
The first part of the play, an act entitled, 'Daughter of My People,' is about Henrietta Szold. Always an ardent zionist, this is not the usual story of her founding of Hadassah, but rather the story of Henrietta as a woman - an older woman, deeply in love for the first time in her life, with a much younger man. This is Henrietta's journey through the awakening of her womanhood, and her womanliness, in a time when women were not allowed to be productive parts of society.
The second act of 'On Holy Ground,' entitled, 'Jihad,' is the story of two mothers, one living in Israeli settlement, and the other living in a would be Palestine. This act is the same location , set in present day. The Middle East is a land where nothing changes, yet nothing stays the same..
The stories rise from the land. It is a land that never changes. A land that endures. A land that has the hand of time and the hand of God and Allah, drawing its boundaries and surfaces, and building its roads and fences. And long after the people have gone, the land will remain. It is seductive, this land. It is home to everyone and home to no one. This land has a life that is its own. It calls questions, and withholds answers. It is its own mystery
