Renaissance Glory with The Festival Consort
THE CONCERT: RENAISSANCE GLORY- A CHRISTMAS CONCERT OF RENAISSANCE MUSIC BY THE FESTIVAL CONSORT
SUNDAY, JANUARY 5 AT 4 PM AT THE CHURCH OF THE INCARNATION, 550 MENDOCINO AVENUE, SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA 95401
The Festival Consort is well-known in the Bay Area as one of the premiere ensembles playing medieval and renaissance music on a variety of early instruments, including full consorts of recorders, shawms and crumhorns, along with renaissance guitar, sackbut, curtal and herald trumpets. In this Christmas concert (which has been performing at the beautiful 138 year old church in Santa Rosa, California, for twelve years) the consort performs with two of the Bay Area's finest singers -- soprano Carol Menke and countertenor Chris Fritzsche. The instrumens are authentic replicas of medieval and renaissance models.
Instrumentalists in the Festival Consort are: David Hogan Smith, Joanna Bramel Young, Robert Cronin and Alan Paul. David Hogan Smith is internationally known as an expert in the making of reeds for medieval and renaissance instruments. He also tunes and adjusts all of the double reeds the ensemble plays. Joanna Bramel Young is a founding member of the Festival Consort, which formed in 1976. She is well known in the Bay Area as a performer and teacher of the recorder. She also plays early double reed instruments. Alan Paul performs in many concerts in the Bay Area both as a baroque oboe player and specialist on renaissance wind instruments. Robert Cronin, instrument builder, built all of the shawms and the curtal (renaissance bassoon) used in the ensemble. His instruments are in demand internationally.
