Rain People
(Francis Ford Coppola, USA, 1969, Beta-SP, 102 min)
Starring Shirley Knight, James Caan and Robert Duvall, Coppolas Rain People tells the story of a pregnant Long Island housewife who journeys across America. Along the way she picks up a brain-damaged ex-football player who becomes a surrogate father for her unborn child. Shot on the road with a minimal crew, a low budget and no studio deal, this film convinced Coppola and his young assistant, George Lucas, that filmmaking outside the Hollywood system was a viable and preferable alternative. American Zoetrope was born!
