Left Coast Chamber Ensemble 2: Happy Birthdays! Messiaen, Carter, and Rorem
Featuring flutist Stacey Pelinka, cellist Leighton Fong, and pianist Eric Zivian
With special guest Susan Rode Morris, soprano
Come celebrate the winter birthdays of Olivier Messiaen and Elliott Carter with the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble. Messiaen, born December 10, 1908 in Avignon, France, would have been almost exactly 100 years old, had he lived to hear this performance of his Le Merle Noir. New Yorker Elliott Carter will turn 100 on December 11. We hear his Enchanted Preludes for flute and cello. Ned Rorem is the youngster in this venerable group of composers. His trio for flute, cello and piano is one of his finest works of chamber music.
The oldest work on the program, Ravels Chansons Madcasses, caused an enormous stir when it premiered in 1926. Soprano Susan Rode Morris joins the ensemble for this set of erotic and political songs. Finally, heralding the next generation of composers is Ryan Brown. His brand new companion piece to Enchanted Preludes receives a world premiere in the excellent company of four twentieth century masters.
