Dropstone Farms Open House/Farmwarming!
We bought a farm! I'm not really sure what we were thinking at the time, but here we are: 95 acres in the Orting Valley, outside of Puyallup (which is outside of Tacoma). A former dairy, the farm includes lots of existing infrastructure -- barns, some fencing, septic field, irrigation pump -- though no livable house, so we are living in a travel trailer for the time being.
We took possession on July 1st and we want to have folks out to see the place before the season ends!
So we are holding an open house! Drop in anytime after 11am on Saturday, October 12, and stay as long as you like.
Here's who you get to see: - 13 cows - 5 sheep - 2 goats - approx 200 broiler chickens - 16 pigs - 8 other pigs - 10 other other pigs -- new little cute ones! - approx 30 laying hens and 9 turkeys - 3 geese - 2 dogs - 2 tired, overwhelmed, happy farmers.
THINGS TO KNOW: - This is a working farm, with hazards. We will do our best to block off and/or flag obviously dangerous things, but please pay attention to your surroundings and don't fall in giant holes or grab onto the electric fence. Please pay particular attention to your children. - In addition to our friends-and-family shindig, PCC Farmland Trust, a non-profit farmland preservation organization that helped us with the purchase of the farm, will be bringing shuttles of folks around a few times throughout the day. When the shuttle arrives, we may need to go tour the farm with those folks. You're welcome to tag along with the shuttle bus tour -- you will get to see us pretend to be real farmers! The shuttle bus portion of the day will be over by 4pm. - Dress for the weather. Rubber boots may be in order even if the day is sunny -- the grass is tall and your pant legs will get wet. - Please contact us if you would like to bring your dog(s). - We have plenty of room for folks to camp out, if you want to spend the night. Let us know if you're interested (so we can make sure to have enough beer and food!).
Even though the ticketing system makes this look all formal, rest assured this is intended as a casual, fun, drop-in-whenever sort of hangout. I just want to make sure I know approximately how many folks to expect.
