A Britten Centenary Celebration
The San Francisco Bay Area Chamber Choir Anthony Pasqua, music director Guest artist: Rodney Gehrke, organ
Celebrate the centenary of Benjamin Britten's birth with music by Britten and music that influenced him.
The Britten works on the program include Festival Te Deum, Op. 32 (1944/45) and Jubilate Deo in C (1961) with Rodney Gehrke, our guest organist. In addition the choir will perform Britten's Choral Dances from his opera Gloriana, at least one of his Flower Songs, and a few of his other shorter works.
In addition to works by Britten, the program also includes works by Henry Purcellexcerpts from his opera King Arthur and a couple of choruses from two of his Odes for St. Cecilia's Day: "Welcome to all the Pleasures" (from his 1683 Ode) and "Soul of the World" (from his 1692 Ode) and a song by John Dowland, "Come, heavy sleep."
