Sommers has spent two years researching and exploring the work, life, and times of HC Andersen, having been drawn by the darkness of his fairytales and the reality of his gregarious and odd life in the 19th Century.
The work that emerges from this research is not a sweet tale of a storyteller or a retelling of his stories, but a work exploring the archetypal psyche of a misfit desperately wanting not only to fit in, but also to be lauded and celebrated. The work incorporates the language and writings of HC Andersen with dance, mask, puppetry, music, projections, and Open Eye's richly designed sound and lighting elements.
Starring Kimberly Richardson (To The Moon) in the role of HC Andersen! Sommers himself will also perform, lurking and skirting to create imagery in projection, puppetry, and character. The Clumsy Man is the third work by Michael Sommers designed specifically for intimate audiences, following Refreshments in 2011 and A Hole in 2012. Only 40 seats per performance; reservations are required and NO LATE SEATING IS ALLOWED.
