Phantom of the Opera (1925 silent movie w/live organ)
1 hour 50 minutes, no intermission
A Halloween special: Rupert Julian's silent film adaptation of Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel is accompanied live on Rockefeller Chapel's E.M. Skinner organ by Dennis James.
Come and see the first film portrayal of Erik the Phantom, played by Lon Chaney. Haunting the watery depths far below the majesty and splendor of the Paris Opera House, the Phantom falls in love with his beautiful opera protégée Christine Daaé, and forces famous lyric singer La Carlotta to give up her role (Marguerite in Faust) to the unknown Christine. Mayhem abounds (and the earliest viewers are reputed to have fainted at the sight of the Phantom unmasked).
