DEFIANT REQUIEM - Film Screening
Robert Deutsch and LEAF Community Arts invite the community to a film screening of Defiant Requiem at the Fine Arts Theater. The film depicts a true story about how artistic courage can save lives and provide hope. All proceeds from the event will support LEAF Schools & Streets arts education programs. Defiant Requiem is a feature-length documentary film which illuminates the extraordinary, untold story of the brave acts of resistance by Jewish prisoners at the concentration camp of Theresienstadt (Terezín) during World War II. The film tells the tale of one passionate Czech choral conductor who was sent to Terezín in 1941 and organized a singing group made up of prisoners. This group used their voices as a form of resistance to the Nazis, and music served as a method of fighting oppression. Song enabled the prisoners to maintain their dignity and humility while battling the worst of mankind with the best of mankind. LEAF Schools & Streets shares this belief that music and arts can serve as tools of empowerment in our lives. LEAF Schools & Streets is Western North Carolina's premier teaching arts education program, matching professional artists with youth throughout the community for hands-on workshops, residencies, interactive performances and mentoring. LEAF Schools & Streets is committed to helping students find and develop their artistic voice while also supporting healthy youth development. Through arts programming, youth are empowered, learn about other cultures, gain access to cultural activities, feel more valued by their community, develop relationships with adult role models and build self-esteem.
The Desert Local News reviewed that the film is a "poignant, affecting, powerful statement on man's inhumanity to man, and a testament to the transformative and redemptive power of the arts." The film conveys a powerful message that is not to be missed.
