Location History:

At the foothills of the beautiful Ramapo mountains in New York, lies the sleepy village of Warwick.

The outskirts of Warwick give way to deep woods which lead toward Wickham lake.

Sitting on the banks of Wickham lake, is a 740-acre complex of foreboding buildings.

Get ready to serve some time at the dark and daunting Mid-Orange Correctional Facility!

New Yorks State Training School for Boys officially opened on July 1, 1932 with 200 boys already on site, and many buildings that wouldnt be completed until 1934. Prior to opening, the location also served as the first in-patient substance abuse facility in the United States.

Housing an average of 400 boys, most between the ages of 13 and 15, this facility provided endangered youths an opportunity to work in the kitchen, maintenance, groundskeeping, on the farm, and to learn a variety of vocational and technical programs.

In The 1950s Richard Biegenwald spent time in the facility as a teenager, eventually being released and committing the serial murders of at least 9 until his capture in 1983.

The 1960s saw teenagers as old as 20 lying about their age to avoid prison. Also, within the facility came the rise of escapes, abuse, gangs, pimps, and violence.

On March 30, 1962, 15-year-old Charles McBride was sent to the facility and house in Cottage B-1.  On October 23, 1962, Charles McBride was beaten in the bathroom by the husband of a cottage wife. A short time later, McBride was reported as hanging from a sheet and bedspread tied over the rafter above his bed. The man that had beaten McBride loosened the knot of the makeshift noose, resulting in McBride falling to the floor and hitting his head, which became the official cause of death.

In 1976, the State Training School for Boys was renamed Mid-Orange Correctional Facility and began a conversion to become an adult male prison. By this time, many of the boys were repeat offenders who would escape or attempt to commit other crimes. The first adult male inmates arrived on June 29, 1977.

In 1979, all guards at the facility walked out, which resulted in the National Guard being sent to lock them out of their homes on the grounds.

By 1984, the AIDS epidemic resulted in nearly 5% of Inmates at Mid-Orange Correctional Facility contracting the disease and being isolated in the infirmary to die.

While the typical number of inmates held at Mid-Orange Correctional Facility was around 750, the population grew to over 1,000 by 1989.

In June 2011, Mid-Orange Correctional Facility closed along with six other state prisons in an effort at consolidation.

The town of Warwick and the Warwick Valley Local Development Corporation took ownership of the property in 2014.

Between 2015 and 2018, areas of the property became known as Hudson Sports Complex, a town park known as Wickham Woodlands, and a brewery named Drowned Lands Brewery. These changes were made or continued under the ownership of Christian and Raluca Fuchs, who acquired the property in November of 2018.

Containing areas with adaptive sports for those with disabilities, Hudson Sports Complex opened in January 2019. The Drowned Lands Brewery began operations in the spring of 2020.
