Pacific Chamber Symphony: Crazy About Bach; Lafayette
It is fitting that Bach's Six Brandenburg Concertos, his calling card resume to  Christian Ludwig, margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, are today widely regarded as among the finest musical compositions of the Baroque era. It is ironic that the margrave never had them performed and they sat buried in the Brandenburg's library for 139 years!

Each of the Concertos feature different solo instruments and different instrumental groups from 2 solo flutes, to solo violin and harpsichord, solo quartet, 2 solo viols, one with no violins, one with 3 groups of solo trios, and more. They were composed at different times for different occasions. And yet there is a compositional purpose, that of a joyful ensemble rendering of virtuosic demands that binds them together into a cohesive unity.

This incredible variety within unity as one hears in all six of these concertos in a single performance is a revelation as to Bach's ultimate composition mastery and imagination.

Maestro Kohl's interpretation of the Concertos has received the highest critical praise, "The result [Brandenburg #3] was an appealingly transparent texture in which Bach's counterpoint rang out all the more clearly." Describing the ensemble as one "that mustered a full-scale sound and musical convection to go with it" he lauded the "electrifying performances". Joshua Kosman, San Francisco Chronicle
