House of Stairs
Five teenagers find themselves trapped in a house containing nothing but stairs. They have no clue how or why they came to be there and no means of escape. Their only source of food is a mysterious machine which operates erratically. Tension builds as the characters try to make sense of what is happening to them, their alliances shifting and cracking as they descend into an elemental struggle for power under conditions out of their control. It is a dark, surreal story which reflects the conflicts and challenges faced by any group of teenagers. The teenagers in the play are portrayed by teenage actors, adding a further dimension of authenticity to this intense and extraordinary drama, suitable for audiences age 10 and up.
House of Stairs was adapted by ACTs Advanced Playwriting Workshop from the novel by William Sleator. It is directed by Talia Etedgee, who directed A.C.T.'s production of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians last fall. Assistant director is Mari Watson, a student at Matignon High School and longtime A.C.T. actor and choreographer.
