THE SUBMISSION by Jeff Talbott
Directed by Pamela Webb Starring... Aaron Mauck as Danny Dixon Cashwell as Pete David Rogozenski as Trevor Jessie Faith as Emelie
Richmond's award-winning Stage B Theatre Company is excitedly continuing on with their 2013-14 season partnership with The Firehouse Theatre. Up next is an arresting play, "The Submission" written by Jeff Talbott, going up October 7-8th and 14-15th at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for Firehouse Subscribers, RAPT members, and senior citizens, and $10 for students with a valid ID.
Playwright Jeff Talbott is no rookie when it comes to the process of submitting works that are inevitably swept up into some director's Mount Everest sized pile of rejected scripts. So the Yale graduate decided to make a slick move. In order to embrace two very controversial areas of our culture, he used this process of the ever so harsh playwright's world as the foundation for which this story is told.
It is the sheer relevance and stark realness of this play that earned Talbott the inaugural Laurents/Hatcher award for emerging playwrights. He first introduces us to Danny, who (similarly to Talbott) is a hopeful, white, gay playwright in today's society. Danny devises a play which focuses on the ties between racial and sexual bigotry. Because of the nature of the material, he decides that the only way his play will be fully received, is if he writes it under the pseudonym of a stereotypical African American female name. When his piece is chosen to be a part of the Humana Play Festival, he is forced to hire a black actress to step into the role of playwright. What ensues next stacks issues on top of issues in what seems to only surmount to an explosive end.
This play is directed by a recent graduate of the TheatreVCU, Pamela Webb and stars four talented individuals: Aaron Mauck, Dixon Cashwell, Jessie Faith, and David Rogozenski, all of whom are current or recent graduates from TheatreVCU.
This play was devised two years ago and yet it's topics seem to speak to us at this exact moment. With events like Proposition 8, Trayvon Martin, and Richmond's own Jett Higham...how can we possibly ignore the growing life of these issues? It is now more important than ever to ask ourselves...can we find a connection between continued repression? Or can we at least begin to build one?
Do not miss out on this poignant, compelling and thought-provoking debate of our time.
"The Submission" is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
