OUR AMERICA - BREAKING FREE
"Our America Breaking Free" highlights 25 years of citizen-to-citizen cultural diplomacy that singers have experienced through trips to the former Soviet Union, Chile, Cuba, and Venezuela. In the first half of the concert, we are joined by past members of the chorus and past Music Directors (founder Helen Lauritzen and Mark Kloepper) to lead us in songs which have carried our message of peace over the course of our history.
The second half of the concert traverses a global path of songs that have deep roots in countries and peoples oppressed by slavery. The concert features African-American spirituals as well as songs from Bulgaria, Brazil, and Native Peoples, as a reminder to Americans that 17,000 people in the U.S. currently live in some form of bondage as a result of human trafficking.
