The trio of Bricklayers devised a 90-min. masked adaptation of this classic with the artistic advisory of Barbara Berlovitz, co-founder of Theatre de la Jeune Lune. Using Moliere with a commedia ideology, The Bricklayers have brought Don Juan to the Modern Era. Performed by three actors playing eleven roles at breakneck speed, this production is filled with physicality and comical mask work combining modern farce, circus buffoonery, and notions of Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed. Don Juan is set in Las Vegas, a perfect backdrop for the misadventures of one very famous libertine in his pursuit of pleasure and power. The Bricklayers' version is rife with insanity and colored with costumes created by Sonya Berlovitz and masks by Etienne Champion, one of the premiere mask-makers in Europe.
Bricklayers was hosted by Open Eye Figure Theatre and Bedlam Theatre in 2011 with their production of Mother Courage and Her Children at the Lab Theater featuring Barbara Berlovitz in the title role. With this national tour, we are pleased to again present their unique work for Twin Cities' audiences. "It's wonderful to have the Bricklayers back in Minneapolis. Their creative energy and playfulness fills the stage. Their Don Juan is very funny and at times heartbreaking. They are taking their mask work one step further with this production and I am thrilled to be a part of it," says Barbra Berlovitz.
Originally based in Chicago, Illinois, The Bricklayers were formed in 2007 by core artistic members Kyle Cadotte and Matt Trucano. The mission is to create a renewed place in the American Theater Scene for the physically demanding, social-examining and humor-expanding world of mask-theater. Bricklayers specialize in the French mask technique l'Essentiel, and have trained in Suzuki Method, Viewpoints, Commedia dell'Arte, Chicago Improvisational techniques, Poor Theatre and more. The company has worked in collaboration with respected artists from across the globe including Mariana Araoz, EtiƩnne Champion and Christophe Patty of Paris mask company, Collectif Masque, Mario Gonzalez, creator of l'Essentiel, Swedish designer Marta Cicionesi, and Chicago-based composer Mark Messing. Large-scale productions of Twelfth Night: Galaxy 4.2, Mother Courage and Her Children and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde were presented in Chicago as well as for rural and urban audiences in Minnesota. The current National Tour of Don Juan in Vegas will be presented in eighteen cities in seven states.
