Micro Budgets: Yes, We Did It For That Little
It deserves to be said again that the down-turning cost of digital filmmaking equipment has created a landslide of opportunity and conversely marketplace saturation. It's the democratization of movie-making. You CAN make that story you always wanted to. Sure grandma or mom might be craft service, but hey, you made your movie. CIFF 2013 is loaded with micro-budget examples of people simply doing what it takes to get their film realized. "The Battery", "Common Chord", "Mourning Has Broken", and "Remember" are prime examples of ingenuity and perseverance manifest. North Country Cinema's "The Valley Below" (currently in production) was one of eight maiden projects made under the new Telefilm Micro-Budget stream. Alberta is making its voice heard too in this can-do fearless universe of possibility. Small budgets, huge steps forward.
