HARRY CHAPIN - Rare Performances
Join the Chapin family in this salute to our hometown hero, Harry Chapin, a one-night-only opportunity to experience the beauty of his music and be captivated by his charisma
In Person: Sandy and Josh Chapin Few Long Islanders have had a greater artistic and social impact than legendary singer-songwriter Harry Chapin. He was born in 1942 into a family of artists in Greenwich Village in New York City His paternal grandfather, James Chapin, was an important painter. His maternal grandfather, Kenneth Burke, was a renowned philosopher and literary critic. His father, Jim Chapin, is a well known jazz drummer who played with Tommy Dorsey and Woody Herman. His uncle, Richard Leacock, was the famed cinema verite filmmaker. All of these influences can be found in his urban folk, miniature movie story songs of blue collar Americans. Best known for such songs as "Taxi" and "Cat's in the Cradle," Harry had a gift for telling a story and creating three-dimensional characters. His folk-rock style and narrative details borrowed from life blended with powerful insights into our political and personal realities. He offered social commentary that is still relevant today. His commitment to the world and especially to Long Island extended to his charity work, including the establishment of Long Island Cares, an important organization that still helps the needy in our area. This special evening will honor Harry Chapin's memory by showing rare performances from live concerts and television that capture Harry's magic in front of an audience. Among highlights will be "Taxi," "Sniper," "WOLD," "Mr. Tanner," "Cat's in the Cradle," and "What Made America Famous." (Approx: 110 minutes) Co-Presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington
