2008 Waterloo Festival for Animated Cinema - DIE ABENTEUER DES PRINZEN ACHMED
SPECIAL GALA PRESENTATION reception to follow in the Crystal Ballroom at the Walper Terrace
Based on stories from 1001 Arabian Nights, this timeless classic follows the adventures of Prince Achmed as he is tricked by an evil sorcerer into riding a magical horse, which takes him to faraway lands where he falls in love with the beautiful princess Pari Banu, and must do battle with the sorcerer and an army of demons to save her from certain death.
This special presentation features the British Film Institutes painstaking restoration from the earliest known copy of the film, a coloured nitrate positive on Agfa film stock with edited English intertitles on Kodak and Pathe material from 1925-1927. The images shown on this page are from one of three black-and-white dupe-negatives made in 1949, 1955 and 1969 from this same nitrate positive. The 35mm print that is being screened at the Festival has been tinted according to the handwritten instructions on the nitrate copy, in a manner that corresponds with the original. The intertitles were recreated from censorship cards preserved at the Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv.
The film score will be performed live at the screening by its composer, Ranch Romance alumni Miles and Karina.
