You Can't Take It With You
You Cant Take It With You
Directed by Robert Encila
(Tucson, AZ) St. Francis in the Foothills Theatre Collaborative opens the fall season with the classic American comedy You Cant Take It With You November 13th 23rd for seven performances. George S. Kaufman and Moss Harts Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a celebration of living in the moment, following your heart and cherishing the embrace of a loving family.
You Cant Take It With You opened on Broadway in 1936 and proved to be a tonic for a country reeling from the Great Depression. The Sycamore home is a place filled with mayhem and oddball characters, a place where anything can happen. At the head of the family is Grandpa, a businessman who one day dropped out of the rat race, realizing that life was too precious to be spent in an office. When his granddaughter, Alice, becomes engaged to the attractive, young, and wealthy Tony Kirby, the meeting between the two families erupts in fireworks (literally) and laughter.
The world was not so different then from our world now with unemployment, racism, economic uncertainty, unstable foreign governments and threats to homeland security. Against this backdrop, the comedic zaniness of You Cant Take It With You captures the universal themes of love, family and living life to its fullest.
