This four-day training is a thorough orientation to the discipline of social marketing, with specific applications to influencing behaviors that protect the environment. This training is designed for communications, project or program managers that require a behavior-change outcome to successfully meet their project/program goals. (This training will specifically prepare and support stormwater services managers for using social marketing techniques to meet National Pollution Discharge Elimination Systems requirements, through education and outreach. This training is partially supported through an NEP grant to STORM.)
A 10-step framework for developing a strategic social marketing plan will define each step and illustrate those with case examples.
We will team those new to social marketing with practitioners as sessions combine presentations with group discussions and interactive exercises. Participants will work in teams to develop a draft social marketing plan. Nancy Lee will provide advice and consulting to groups on their plans. Be prepared to bring your social marketing project to be designed, refined or updated. Schedule:
Session 1 and 2 will be a day apart to give teams time to confirm their topic, plan purpose, focus and priority audience. Teams then have two weeks between session 2 and 3 to conduct qualitative research to inform their strategic marketing intervention mix. Between sessions 3 and 4, teams will finalize draft strategies. Between sessions and at the completion of the session, Nancy Lee will review the team plans and provide comments. She will also review and provide feedback after Day 4 on final team plans.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to: 1. Understand the definition or social marketing. 2. Identify appropriate uses of the social marketing approach. 3. Identify the appropriate application of social marketing research. 4. Learn a 10-step model for developing, implementing and evaluating a social marketing campaign. 5. Design select components of a social marketing plan. 6. Experience the social marketing mindset.
