The Gospel Hymn Project
The Gospel Hymn Project Monthly Concert Series Kicks Off Sunday, November 9, 2008 w/ Three Showcases Featuring Outstanding Memphis Artists Irene Stevenson, Keia Johnson, Sandra Bray and others. The Gospel Hymn Project serves as a conservatory of hymns dedicated to preserving the tradition of hymn singing. It was created with the belief that singing and listening to hymns presents an opportunity for each of us to receive songs that make melodies in our hearts and bring peace to our minds - "What needless pain we bear." The Gospel Hymn Project is a concert series like no other with hymns set and presented in an intimate setting so that the artist and audience can create a fictive kinship. Original hymns as sung by our ancestors and those adapted to modern times are presented at all levels of performance - some raw and unpolished, some to melodic perfection, some with no instrumentation or accompaniment and some with audience interaction and participation. The Gospel Hymn Project directly appeals to the aural histories of our people and manifests the voices within our souls to soothe, comfort, give hope and inspire.
