A Hidden Culture in Our Midst: The Romaniote Jews of Janina, Greece
Below the skyscrapers on the Lower East Side lies a hidden treasure: a 2,000-year-old culture virtually unknown, even to its neighbors. The culture is that of Romaniote Jews, who hail from Janina, Greece. Their house of worship and a museum celebrating their culture can be found in a historic synagogue that has remained virtually unchanged since it was built in 1927. The synagogue, Kehila Kedosha Janina, is also the only one of its kind in the Western Hemisphere for this sect, which represents an obscure branch of Judaism dating to Roman times. In 2004, the City of New York designated the synagogue as a historic landmark. Price includes guided tour and kosher Greek-Jewish lunch; open to all faiths.
