Lovejoy Columns & Tom Bike Tour
"Lovejoy Columns and Tom" is a bicycle tour of a former industrial area of Portland, now known as the Pearl District. The tour, narrated by James Harrison, Friends of the Columns and guided by Carye Bye, Portland's Museum Lady, will feature the perilous story about the saving of the Lovejoy Columns and the almost forgotten history of an immigrant Greek railway worker, sign painter and artist, Tom Stefopoulos. The tour's backdrop and additional historical highlights will feature the evolution of a gritty industrial area into what is now known as the Pearl District. Funds raised from the tour will provide funding for a gravestone for Tom's currently unmarked grave at the Rose City cemetery.
The easy-paced 2.5 hour, bike tour will explore Old Town's Greek roots in the Pearl District, before ending at the Hellenic-American Cultural Center & Museum (HACCM) for Greek refreshments and a guided tour of an incredible collection of Tom's previously unseen, original pen and ink art. The tour will include a viewing of Vanessa Renwick's work-in-progress film, Lovejoy. A post-tour option includes a visit to Tom's unmarked grave at Rose City cemetery at NE 57th and Fremont.
Tour Max: 40. Tour participants are responsible for bringing their own bicycle and bike lock.
