The BREW: Clarinet Thing & Real Vocal String Quartet
Clarinet Thing is a quartet of virtuosic clarinetists. Sheldon Brown, Beth Custer, Ben Goldberg and Harvey Wainapel perform arrangements of a wide range of jazz, world, and new music on the entire family of clarinets. The group plays a repertoire of unusual arrangements by Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, John Carter, Eubie Blake and Bobby Bradford, as well as original compositions.
Integrating roots music with jazz, classical, and pop flourishes, the Real Vocal String Quartet plucks, bows and hammers two violins, a viola and a cello, to play a rowdy mix of originals and intriguing arrangements. The quartet traverses the globe with ease, playing a Brazilian choro or a Polish Polka one moment and an Irish fiddle tune the next.
Clarinet Thing is a killer quartet that plays a rich, woody blend of original music and and other pieces that pop and sway with the pregnant sound of an improvising clarinet choir.San Francisco Chronicle
