SUMMARY: Act I: Lady Sneerwell (who is in love with Charles), and Joseph (who is in love with Maria), conspire to split up Charles and Maria by spreading rumors about Charles and Sir Peter Teazle's young wife, Lady Teazle, who does not get along with her older husband.
Act II: Joseph tries to woo Maria and Lady Teazle gets jealous because he has been wooing her as well. Meanwhile, Sir Oliver arrives and tells Sir Peter that he will visit his nephews Joseph and Charles in disguise to test their character.
Act III: Sir Peter and Lady Teazle quarrel and decide to separate. Sir Oliver visits Charles posing as a moneylender named Mr. Premium. Charles doesn't recognize his uncle, and proceeds to sell all he has left of his family heirlooms: the family portrait collection (much to Sir Oliver's horror).
Act IV: Charles auctions off his family portraits at cheap prices for Sir Oliver. However Charles is saved when he refuses to sell the portrait of his uncle, Sir Oliver, and even more so when Charles sends money to their needy relative, Stanley. Meanwhile, Joseph tries to convince Lady Teazle that he doesn't have feelings for Maria. When her husband, Sir Peter, arrives, she hides behind a folding screen. Sir Peter voices his suspicions about Lady Teazle and Charles. When Charles arrives, Sir Peter hides in the closet. Charles exposes Joseph's relationship with Lady Teazle. Sir Peter comes out and apologizes for suspecting him. Charles throws down the screen to reveal Lady Teazle. She denounces Joseph and Joseph is left trying to explain himself.
Act V: Sir Oliver visits Joseph (posing as Stanley) to ask for money. Joseph refuses the request and Sir Oliver leaves. Meanwhile, rumors are flying about a duel between the Surface brothers and Sir Peter who is supposed to have been wounded. Soon Sir Oliver's true identity is revealed to his nephews. Sir Oliver names Charles as his heir, Lady Sneerwell and Joseph are exposed in their lies, Lady Teazle and Sir Peter are resolved, and Charles proposes to Maria.
