On this very special Thursday afternoon we're getting some distanced physical fitness with Capoeira instructor Henry Young. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. It was developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil at the beginning of the 16th century. It is known for its acrobatic and complex maneuvers, often involving hands on the ground and inverted kicks. Great for all ages and levels (parents, too!). Dress comfortably and bring water!
As a student at Columbia University, Henry studied in a yearlong cultural program in Brazil, 1980-1981. In 1982 be became member of Dance Brazil, NYC-based dance company emphasizing African-Brazilian movement including capoeira movement, music, and song traditions. Henry graduated in 1982 from Columbia University with BA/BS degree in Political Science / Education and taught US history, social studies and global history in the NY Public school system from 1984-2014 .
Since retiring in 2014 from a career in teaching he has become a certified personal trainer offering clients training programs that include bodyweight resistance, and movement exercises which emphasize the animals-based movements of the African-based martial arts system of Capoeira, developed in Brazil. Henry teaches this practice to all ages.
