Salvador Santana Band at Halloween Costume Ball
Arena Theater presents Salvador Santana Band (SSB) at a Halloween Costume Ball with DJ Sister Yasmin on Friday October 31, 2008. Led by 25-year-old keyboardist, vocalist, songwriter and bandleader Salvador Santana, the bands sound is an amalgam of funk, hip-hop, reggae, rock, and traditional Latin music.
The Halloween party starts when doors open at 8:00 PM with DJ Sister Yasmin spinning a mix of global music and funky beats to heat up the dance floor in preparation for SSB at 10:00 PM. The party will feature a costume contest with prizes for best costumes. Tickets are $20.00, available online at brownpapertickets.com, or at local outlets. Arena Theater members with cards may purchase tickets for $18.00 at local outlets.
SSB -- the collectives' official debut album -- reflects the collaboration and innovation the group brings to their wide array of musical styles. Built out of what Salvador Santana calls a mix of all my favorite music, the best of what's impacted my life, all coming together in a new way SSB features the soulful intonations of Quincy McCrary (formerly of Quetzal and Burning Star) with bassist Emerson Cardenas, guitarist Woody Aplanalp, drummer Tony Austin (who moonlights for Solomon Burke) and former Ozomatli multi-instrumentalist Jose Crunchy Espinosa. The album SSB includes Me & U, a collaboration between the band and Salvador's father, legendary guitarist Carlos Santana.
Born and raised in Northern California, Salvador Santana studied at San Francisco's heralded School of the Arts before attending Cal Arts in Valencia, CA. In 2004 the band began an active touring schedule and started to develop their musical imprint. It was around this time that Salvador collaborated with his father on Open Up Your Eyes, which can be found on the Milagro Foundation benefit CD Food for Thought. In 2006, the SSB teamed up with Santanas Andy Vargas for an acclaimed reworking of Evil Ways the lead track on the 2006 compilation, A Song For My Father. With the arrival of 2008s SSB, the Salvador Santana Band is set to capture the attention of music lovers throughout the world.
