Spoon River Anthology, A Readers Theatre Production
Readers Theatre Production of Spoon River Anthology.
Directed by Tim O'Connor.
Featuring Bruce Kelly, Dave Iorns, Marion Jeffrey, Sheila O'Connor, Andy Kerr, Karen Kerouac, and Paul Miscan.
Spoon River Anthology is a collection of unusual, short, free-form poems that collectively describe the life of the fictional small town of Spoon River, named after the real Spoon River that ran near Masters' home town.
Unconventional in both style and content, it shattered the myths of small town American life.
Edgar Lee Master's Spoon River Anthology was an immediate commercial success when it was published in 1915.
Each poem is an epitaph of a dead citizen, delivered by the dead themselves.
Some recite their histories and turning points, others make observations of life from the outside, and petty ones complain of the treatment of their graves, while few tell how they really died.
Speaking without reason to lie or fear the consequences, they construct a picture of life in their town that is shorn of all faades.
Tim OConnor has directed all but one of the Readers Theatre productions at the historic cultural center. This is a very entertaining way to spend an afternoon or evening, said OConnor recently. It brings the audience back to the days when radio was the primary form of entertainment. The cast, most of whom have performed at the Foundry many times in the past, are all stars in their own right, but enjoy this informal and intimate interaction with the audience.
READERS THEATRE -WHAT IS IT? Readers Theatre has been called many things: Interpreters Theatre, Chamber Theatre, Platform Theatre, Concert Reading, Staged Reading, Drama of the Living Voice and (my favorite) Theatre of the Mind ... Theatre of the Imagination. It is called Readers Theatre by most. A combination of oral interpretation and conventional theatre utilizing two or more readers ... to communicate the full intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic content of the literature to an audience.
From the audience's standpoint, the Readers Theatre experience is one of involvement. The audience participates with its imagination to provide the sets, costumes, and the props. Skilled voice actors, when well-rehearsed, cause an audience to experience literature as they, the actors, experience it.
