BEST OF THE FEST : God Save the King
A comic tour de force, God Save the King is an adrenalin-infused story of the Swedish punk-rock scene at the start of the '80s. It is 1984. Abra is in her late teens and lives in a small country town. She loves punk rock and dresses accordingly. The problem is that nobody else does, so Abra is constantly harassed, even by her own sister and the latter's boyfriend. When a touring rock band is forced to fiee the town after a disastrous concert, Abra packs her few belongings and goes with it to Gothenburg. On the tour bus, she befriends the easygoing Millan and moves in with her in Gothenburg. The two girls start to work at a sausage factory run by the stiff Lundstrom, and Abra becomes infatuated with one of her co-workers, Dickan. The girls' dream is to form a punk band and play at the legendary rock club, Erroll's. Scouting for possible members, they meet Gloria and Isa. They find it's not easy to get gigs. Winner of the Swedish Film Institutes Guldbagge Award (the Golden Beetle), the finale is predictable but nonetheless enjoyable, and the movie is fast, funny and entertaining.
