BEAT THE DEVIL
(1953) dir John Huston w/Bogart, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, Robert Morley, Peter Lorre, Bernard Lee [100 min; 35mm] A hilarious exercise in self-parody from Huston, Bogart, and Lorre, BEAT THE DEVIL was the first Bogart film to play here at the Brattle and it remains a staff and audience favorite to this day. With Robert Morley standing in for Sidney Greenstreet, Bogie and Lorre poke fun at their various onscreen personas, especially those from CASABLANCA and THE MALTESE FALCON, as the three vie amongst themselves for a piece of real estate in Africa that is supposedly packed with uranium. Gloriously silly and over-the-top, BEAT THE DEVIL is as much fun to watch as it seems it was to make.
