THE AFRICAN QUEEN
(1951) dir John Huston w/Bogart, Katharine Hepburn [105 min; DCP] Thanks to director/pal John Huston, Bogie at long last received an absurdly overdue Oscar statuette for his leading role in this epic romance masquerading as a jungle adventure film. Bogie plays Charlie Allnut, the cranky captain of a riverboat in Africa during World War I. When he agrees to the considerable task of ferrying a missionary back to civilization he gets far more than he bargained for in the form of Katharine Hepburn's Rose Sayer, a prim, commanding woman. Oscar voters were so impressed by this now beloved classic that they awarded Bogie the Best Actor Award above Marlon Brando's star-making turn in A Streetcar Named Desire.
