THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE
(1948) dir John Huston w/Bogart, Walter Huston, Tim Holt [126 min; 35mm] Bogie stars as the tormented Fred C. Dobbs in this legendary drama. Dobbs is one half of a down-on-their-luck pair of ex-pats who meet up in Mexico and get stiffed by the same shady guy. Things begin to look up for Dobbs and his buddy Curtin (Holt) when they meet up with a crotchety old prospector (played to the hilt by John Huston's father Walter) who convinces them that there's still gold to be had in them thar hills. What they don't realize is that there may be gold but there's also hunger, thirst, bandits ("I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!") and wicked greed in them hills as well. A pinnacle of Bogie's acting career and yet he'd still have to wait another 3 years for that Oscar.
