In this, his first on-screen pairing with Bacall, Bogie plays Steve Morgan, a down on his luck American fishing boat captain in Martinique during WWII. Pressured by a friend, a beautiful newcomer (Bacall), and a boatload of debt, Steve agrees to help the French Resistance smuggle a couple onto the island and runs afoul of the police in the process.
