A not-to-miss event! Passionate jazz vocalist Lisa Engelken returns to The Sound Room after last February's raucous sold-out performance.
Please join us in celebrating the one-year anniversary of The Sound Room and the release of Lisa Engelken's highly-anticipated new jazz CD Little Warrior.
Expect the unexpected as Lisa will be joined by a powerhouse band that features the best in Bay Area music. This dynamic quintet comes together for two nights for the live performance of the entire Little Warrior album: Saturday, November 9 & Sunday, November 10. Come to one or both events!
Classically and theatrically trained, the Kansas-born straight shooter wields an acrobatic three-octave range. Equal parts freight train and tumbleweed, Lisa alternately locomotes and floats through tunes, electrifying audiences with an intensity and immediacy that have garnered her comparisons to Evel Knievel, Janis Joplin and even a roaring Harley Davidson.
About Little Warrior: Engelken has written, arranged & produced the eleven arresting tracks on Little Warrior. The album features four of Lisa's originals, plus "Undertow," a haunting new lyric version of Wayne Shorter's "Nefertiti." Rounding out the track list are bold adaptations of works by Tom Waits, Abbey Lincoln, The Cars, and Joni Mitchell. Lisa, who speaks fluent Italian, has included a joyous samba written by Franco Godi for the Italian children's cartoon Signor Rossi.
Little Warrior is Engelken's follow-up to Caravan, named among the "Best of 2010" by the Jazz Journalists Association and includes "From the Earth," Lisa's exciting lyric version of Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay."
Based in San Francisco, Lisa has shared the stage with such diverse artists as Tom Waits, Yo La Tengo, John Cameron Mitchell, Stephen Trask, Greg Brown, and TBone Burnett. Appearances include Fillmore Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ SummerFest, San Jose Jazz Festival, New York New Music Festival, South-by-Southwest. Engelken was awarded the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal as Yitzhak in the rock musical "Hedwig & the Angry Inch."
"If you care to think of a song as a sort of emotional map, I'd say you drive an all-terrain vehicle." - A new fan, after seeing Lisa's live show
Tune in 9AM, Thursday, November 7th, to KCSM (91 FM), to preview tracks from Little Warrior and to hear Lisa's interview on "Morning Cup of Jazz" hosted by the effervescent Alisa Clancy. For your pre-release copy or download of Little Warrior, visit lisaengelken.com.
