BEST OF THE FEST : People of Rome
Acclaimed director Ettore Scola invites us on a bus ride through Rome, and in a series of vignettes, some comic, some poignant and sad, he shows us a realistic view of the Rome of today. The journey starts early in the morning, as a husband's morning coffee and lunch are prepared before his departure for a job that no longer exists, but which he has not been able to tell his wife! Among the comic situations along the way, a spontaneous virtuoso recitation of Italian slang for the male anatomy, and a woman attending a funeral who is sorry to see how few people have turned out, for had she had any idea that the attendance would be so small, she wouldn't have come either! And the ride includes some unpleasant views of the city's life: the touching treatment of Alzheimer's patients in a Rome clinic, the conditions of the homeless, and the elderly father whose son is proposing to move him into a rest home. We get a look at how Rome, with its influx of immigrants, deals with racism, the elderly, and the enthusiasm for its soccer team. Things bitter, and things sweet, the latter including the film's late night conclusion, the end of the bus ride, when two old friends meet again to talk, and we hear them greet one another with the very personal, private nicknames with which they've referred to each other for years, simply: "Ciao Pi!", "Ciao Pe!" - 2006 Italian Film Festival
