BEST OF THE FEST : Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico
He was one of the greatest legends of Canadian country music, a hard-living, heavy-drink-ing honky-tonker who had the misfortune of dying at the peak of his success. Or did he? Michael Mabbott's spirited mockumentary takes us behind the scenes in the life of the Fictional Guy Terrifico, the eternally enigmatic bad boy of 1970s country rock. Compiling vintage concert footage, backstage antics and interviews with real life stars like Kris Kristofferson, Levon Helm and Phil Kaufman, Mabbott creates a hilarious and intriguing portrait of the man Merle Haggard sums up with, Great music, but a turd of a persona. As the aforementioned celebrities assemble to work on a Guy Terrifico tribute album, nagging rumors of the singer's staged death keep surfacing. Boasting a funny and unforgettable lead performance by singer-songwriter Matt Murphy (two of the soundtrack's original songs received Canadian Genie Award nominations), The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico is must-see material for fans of This is Spinal Tap, Dill Scallion and the works of Christopher Guest.
Former journalist and comedy writer Michael Mabbott worked as an editor on The Oprah Winfrey Show before mounting The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terriï¬Âco, his debut feature. The ï¬Âlm was named Best Canadian First Feature at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival.
