CORMAC MCCARTHY
Simple Gifts is pleased to present the signature voice, the ironic wit and the keen insight of New England's own Cormac McCarthy. Growing up in the small milling town of Lempster NH, a depressed and depressing environment, has evidently fuelled Cormac's somber lyrics and blue-collar sense of dignity. He was inspired to play music when his sister, visiting home from college, brought records by Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Eric Anderson. He traded his clarinet for a guitar and began his journey as one of America's finest singer-songwriters. Cormac was college roommates with Bill Morrissey, who encouraged him to perform his music in public, and co-wrote the song "Marigold Hall" with Morrissey.
"There's a lot of talk about the middle class," says McCarthy, "but no one's talking about the great difficulty of moving up into the middle class, about the working poor. Many working people are just one minor disaster away from being homeless. The songs I write are inspired by what I'm seeing and what I'm not hearing."
