(500) Days of Spectacular: A Conversation with Scott Neustadter and Tom McNulty
Have you ever dreamed of turning that life ruining, soul crushing relationship into the next indie blockbuster? Before Zooey Deschanel became the symbol of the girl you never get over and Joseph Gordon-Levitt became a leading everyman, there was Scott Neustadter, who lived his own ""(500) Days of Summer" on which his film was based. He's just penned the "The Spectacular Now", a romantic comedy about an alcoholic high school senior and his love for the girl next door. Scott will share his secrets for elevating personal pain into the universal and much more in this one-hour discussion. Joining him is "The Spectacular Now" Producer Tom McNulty ("Date Night"), who will talk about the process of bringing the project from script to screen. Heartbreak and trip to IKEA not included.
About Scott Neustadter: Scott Neustadter is an award-winning screenwriter. Along with writing partner Michael H. Weber, he wrote the acclaimed breakout indie success "(500) Days of Summer" (2009), a movie inspired by an ill-fated romance Neustadter went through while in London. He and Weber also wrote "The Pink Panther 2" (2009), starring Steve Martin. Admired for their ability to break free from comedy clichés and broadly drawn, shiny Hollywood characters, Neustadter and Weber sold half a dozen more scripts in quick succession and were approached to develop their own primetime series, "Friends With Benefits" while collaborating on screen adaptations of James Collins' novel, "Beginner's Greek" and the Tim Tharp coming-of-age novel, "The Spectacular Now", which re-teamed them with director Marc Webb. Neustadter and Weber were nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, a Satellite Award, a WGA award, and a Best Screenplay Award nomination from the Broadcast Film Critics' Association. "(500) Days of Summer" won the Hollywood Film Festival's Hollywood Breakthrough Screenwriter Award, Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award for Best Screenplay and Southeastern Film Critics Association Award for Best Original Screenplay.
About Tom McNulty: Tom McNulty is the President of Production at Global Produce, a production company housed at Universal Studios where he recently produced "The Spectacular Now". Prior to working at Global Produce, Tom produced and oversaw production on numerous projects at various studios, most notably "The Watch", "Night At The Museum," "Night At The Museum; Battle Of The Smithsonian," "Cheaper By The Dozen 2," "What Happens In Vegas," "The Rocker," and "Date Night."
