Mangia Mangia
Mangia, Mangia! Premieres
Humor, heart and a little something to eat . Those are the key ingredients of Mangia, Mangia! the upcoming production from TAPIT/new works Ensemble Theater, running Friday, November 7 through Sunday, November 23.
Inspired by real-life reminiscences and recipes, this new play brings to life the good times and tastes of Madisons fabled Greenbush neighborhood. Performances will take place at the fully-accessible TAPIT/new works Studio Theater at 1957 Winnebago St., near the Barrymore Theater.
An intergenerational cast takes audiences inside the kitchens, homes and even the imaginations of the women who kept the Greenbush clean and well-fed.
In post-performance discussions and tastings of old family recipes featured in the play, audiences will share their favorite food memories and enjoy some real Italian cooking, thanks to catering from Bunkys Restaurant. Like the rest of the evenings entertainment, these samples will be the real deal Bunks co-owner Teresa Pullara-Ouabels family owned the original Bunkys Restaurant on Spaghetti Corners back in the day.
The script, written by TAPIT/new works producing artistic director, award-winning playwright Danielle Dresden, is based on interviews with former Greenbush residents and a series of cookbooks featuring recipes and memories of the Greenbush by Catherine Tripalin Murray.
Jody Reiss helms the production, coordinating numbers by TAPIT new works producing artistic director, Donna Peckett, with performances by actors Emily Morrison Weeks, Sarah Whelan, Peckett and Dresden. UW-Madison professor, Traci Nathans-Kelly, will coordinate discussions at selected performances, exploring how food connects people across cultures and generations. Sets by Michael Duffy and costumes by Terri Lynn Alexander create a welcoming and evocative environment.
Mangia, Mangia! will be performed Fridays, November 7, 14 and 21 at 8:00 pm; Saturdays, November 8, 15 and 22 at 4:00 pm; Saturdays, November 15 and 22 at 8 pm; and Sundays, November 9, 16, 23 at 4:00 pm.
Tickets are $17, which includes the show and the sampling of Italian cuisine. For information and reservations, please call TAPIT/new works Ensemble Theater at 608.244.2938.
