When Did You Last See Your Father?
Mens Lives: A monthly exploration of the inner emotional world
Film and Workshop with Dr. F. Towne Allen, a local psychotherapist, former chiropractor, and Cinema Arts patron since 1975. Dr. Allen specializes in mens and couple issues in his practice in Centerport. In 1975, he joined a mens group that formed as the result of discussions after the Cinema Arts series Mens Lives. Inspired by his experience in this group, Dr. Allen has started and facilitated numerous other mens groups, many of which are still meeting weekly after as long as 18 years. Members of various mens groups from the Huntington area will be in attendance to answer questions about their unique groups, both facilitated and leaderless.
When Did You Last See Your Father? is a deeply affecting story about the challenges of coming to terms with the past lives and old sins of our parents. Blake, as a sensitive eight-year-old in the tightlipped England of the fifties, saw his father, Arthur (Jim Broadbent), as something of an ogre, never once receiving a word of praise from his father. Dominated by Arthurs personality throughout his life, Blake gradually resigns himself to their unequal relationship as he gets older. When his father falls terminally ill, the adult Blake (Colin Firth) is compelled to confront the difficult history they share, which has prevented any meaningful connection between the two men. At the same time, Blake comes to understand that in his own clumsy and offensive way, Arthur was doing his best to show his son he loved him. As Arthurs health deteriorates, Blake struggles to mend the wounds of the past. The film avoids sentimentality in favor of a hard-hitting meditation on regret and the uneasy but powerful bond between fathers and sons.
