Another SLO Little Theatre Adventure: A Play, A Talk and a Nosh "Independence" at the LIttle Theatre
We'll enjoy a matinee performance of SLO Little Theatre's production of 'Independence," followed by a talkback - led by longtime SLO Little Theatre actor and volunteer, Elaine Fournier, followed then by an opportunity to share a bite to eat and more conversation with members of the cast and crew.
The play: The setting is the small town of Independence, Iowa, the lifelong home of Evelyn Briggs. Her oldest daughter, Kess, is a university professor in Minneapolis, but she has come home at the request of her sister, Jo who is concerned for Evelyn's mental health. Kess, a professed lesbian, wants to cut her family ties once and for all; Jo, an incurable romantic and longtime virgin, has now become pregnant; while Sherry, salty-tongued and amoral, wants only to finish high school so she can leave home for good. In the end, there is no accommodation possible but, instead, only a kind of arbitrary independence for each of the protagonists, as they come to realize that each must find her own heavenor hellin her own way.
The talkback: A talkback is a post-show informal conversation with members of Independence's artistic staff and cast. It will be led by long-time SLO Little Theatre contributor Elaine Fournier. This is a chance for you to learn about the thinking and planning that must be done before the play goes on. Elaine may talk about the script itself, themes, mother and daughters, the author, character development from the actor's point of view, and/or the rehearsal process. You may ask any questions about the show or artistic process and gain more of an insight into the theater works.
All this and food: After the talkback, we'll remain at the theater and have an opportunity to share a bite to eat with cast and crew and to continue our conversations on a more personal basis.
Elaine Fornier has a Master's in English with a dramatic literature emphasis. She taught theatre appreciation, acting, dramatic literature and film at Cuesta College, and taught English composition at Cal Poly and Hancock College.
