Kiss Me, Kate
Combine Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" with Cole Porter's music and lyrics to get KISS ME, KATE an instant success with every cast and audience. This is a play-within-a-play where each cast member's on-stage life is complicated by what is happening offstage. Kiss Me Kate tells the tale of two once-married, now-divorced musical theater actors, Fred Graham and Lilli Vannessi, who are performing opposite each other in a Broadway-bound musical version of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, in the roles of Petruchio and Katharine. The two begin the show on poor terms, which only get worse as Fred flirts with nightclub starlet Lois Lane, whom he has cast as the show's Bianca. Lois' other beau, Bill Calhoun, is also on board as Lucentio, but it is his gambling losses that really cause problems for Fred. When two gangsters show up to collect on an IOU that Bill signed in Fred's name, Fred must think quickly to appease the gangsters, keep Lilli from leaving in mid-performance, and still put on a successful show! Through two acts of hilarious action, we watch the cast members fight, scheme, fall in love, fall out of love, and fall back in love again... "Kiss Me, Kate" proves that sometimes the best stories in the theatre are the ones going on backstage!
