BADLANDS
40th Anniversary! New Digital Restoration!
(1973) dir Terrence Malick w/Martin Sheen, Sissy Spacek [94 min; DCP] Although we are saddened by the decline of 35mm film, one of the great byproducts of the digital revolution is the availability of some stunning new restorations of classic films. This remastering of Terrence Malick's debut feature is a bright, beautiful return for a gorgeously shot and brilliantly acted film. Sissy Spacek stars as a naïve small-town girl who falls hard for a rakish garbageman (Sheen) who turns out to be more dangerous than she anticipated. Despite its dark subject matter the film was inspired by the real life Starkweather-Fugate spree killings Malick's lyrical compositions make the film an enigmatic and surprisingly delicate Midwestern Gothic. BADLANDS is a haunting rumination on adoration, first love and memory.
