The Drinking & Writing Festival 2013: Jim Morrison
The Drinking & Writing Theater holds the 9th annual Drinking & Writing Festival on Saturday, October 5, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at The Drinking & Writing Theater at Haymarket Pub & Brewery.
This year's festival focuses on Jim Morrison. Jim Morrison was not only the iconic lead singer of The Doors but was a poet in his own right. Morrison's writing includes the books of poetry The Lords and the New Creatures (1969) and An American Prayer (1970). The Doors have a special connection to Chicago: Ray Manzarek, founding member and keyboardist for The Doors is from the South Side of Chicago and graduated from DePaul University.
This year's coveted Drinking & Writing Award for Outstanding Achievement in Drinking & Writing also goes to Jim Morrison. Previous recipients include Rick Kogan, Christopher Hitchens, and Studs Terkel. The festival will include special beers from Chicago breweries, a presentation on Jim Morrison and his writing by Northwestern professor Bill Savage, a talk by Steve Krakow from Secret History of Chicago Music and Paul Durica form Pocket Guide to Hell, and the "2 Drink Minimum Writing Contest" (participants are given a theme related to Jim Morrison/The Doors and given five minutes to write on the theme). Of course, people are encouraged to dress up in their late sixties/early seventies outfits.
