St. Cecilia Presents ARTEK and Les Sacqueboutiers de Toulouse
Between the magnificent Vespers music of Monteverdi and the sublime cantatas of Bach lies an entire repertoire of glorious sacred music. Johann Rosenmüller (1619-1684) was equally a genius, and was one of the most important links between the early and later baroque styles. Born in Leipzig, he published two cantata collections before traveling to Venice where he worked at St. Mark's, returning to Germany at the end of his life. The program features several of Rosenmüller's outstanding solo cantatas for alto or soprano, along with virtuoso instrumental music by Heinrich Biber (1644-1704), Johann Schmelzer (c.1620-1680), and Weckmann (c.1616-1674). The entire program celebrates the incredible flowering of German baroque music in the second half of the 17th century.
