Lyceum 13/14: Aaron Bass
In an era of diminished resources, the arts tend to be looked at as an "extra", an "add-on" and not an essential part of a child's education. We at White Pines disagree with such an assessment. In fact, we wonder if - in marginalizing classes in the arts, and eliminating artistic activities - schools are not actually making matters worse. Aaron Bass is a native of Philadelphia. He began his teaching career with Teach For America's 2001 Atlanta Corps. During his corps years he taught Science and Social studies at John F. Kennedy Middle School. Aaron eventually moved to Douglas High School where he taught US and World History. In 2004 he founded the Breakthrough Fort Lauderdale organization and served as Executive Director for three years. In 2007 He joined KIPP Philadelphia Charter School as the Dean of Upper School. He received his B.A. in Africana Studies and Sociology at Franklin and Marshall College in 2001. He received his Masters in Education Leadership at Florida Atlantic University in 2007. He now serves as principal for KIPP DuBois Collegiate Academy, the first KIPP High School in Philadelphia, and is on the board of directors of White Pines Productions.
